SDG Academy Indonesia Programs to Support Sustainable Development

SDG Academy Indonesia, a collaborative program between Tanoto Foundation, an independent family philanthropy organisation founded by Sukanto Tanoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto in 1981, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), launched SDG Mobile Learning Programme and the SDG Leadership Certification Programme.

Open to the public, the Mobile Learning Programme provides access to all people who want to learn more about SDGs.

Meanwhile, the Sustainable Development Goals Leadership Program seeks to empower leaders in various sectors by enriching their knowledge of development within the SDG framework.

For the first batch of the Sustainable Development Goals Leadership Program, SDG Academy Indonesia has selected around 30 participants from all over Indonesia. These participants will be equipped with complex problem-solving skills through innovative case models as well as hands-on experience from various sources.

Speaking about the launching of the two SDG Academy Indonesia programs, Satrijo Tanudjojo, Global CEO of Tanoto Foundation, said, “The Tanoto Foundation is committed to taking part in the efforts to achieve SDGs in Indonesia. Our partnership with The Ministry of National Development Planning and UNDP Indonesia in establishing the SDG Academy Indonesia is a good practice of how the government, private sector, and communities can work together to accelerate the goals of the SDGs.”

On the same occasion, Resident Representative of UNDP Indonesia, Norimasa Shimomura said that he believed this program would be able to add insights and experiences from around the world which would help UNDP to develop innovative solutions in the context of Indonesia’s development.

In response to the above, the Director of SDG Academy Indonesia, J. Ansye Sopacua invited anyone to gain knowledge about SDGs online.

Chairperson of the National Secretariat of SDGs Indonesia / Expert Staff of the Minister of PPN for Social Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Vivi Yulaswati shared her appreciation of these programs. According to Vivi, these innovative programs from SDG Academy Indonesia can be a platform for stakeholders to learn from each other, contribute, and be inspired through concrete and innovative examples to answer various development challenges. She hoped that SDG Academy Indonesia could contribute to strengthening the capacity of regional leaders in formulating action plans for SDGs and overseeing their implementation, which urgently requires leadership and a variety of reliable technical capacities.

In the 2020 SDG Index, Indonesia’s rank increased from 102 in 2019 to 101 out of 166 countries. This index measures performance based on progress towards achieving the 17 goals in the SDGs. However, Satrijo Tanudjojo admits that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done, expressing his hopes that this innovative collaboration would be able to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs by 2030.

Fun Ways of Learning at Home through Educational Online Games

Helping your kids learn from home can be tough. How do you keep them learning while preventing them from getting bored?

Luckily there are plenty of educational online games you can introduce to your children so that they can learn new skills and knowledge, and have fun at the same time. We’ve previously discussed some of the pros and cons of online games here.

There are so many to choose from depending on what your children are interested in, but we’ve highlighted a few ideas to get you started. And best of all, they can all be access for free!

    1. Observing Outer Space via Your Fingertips

If your child wants to be the next Neil Amstrong or Sally Ride, then take a look at Stellarium. Available on desktop and smartphone, this online games allows your children to observe and search for visible space objects. The games also provides valuable information, such as the distance between the object and earth and how bright these objects shine. Moreover, children can also see constellations in outer space thanks to some attractive visuals.

In addition to Stellarium, you can also download The Sky Live, which helps children observe the solar system and learn about objects such as comets and asteroids.

    2. Learning History from Home

After exploring outer space, come back down to earth and let your children learn history by exploring virtual museums.

Currently, there are many museums in Indonesia offering these virtual experiences, including the National Museum of Indonesia and Sangiran Museum.

The former is the largest museum in Southeast Asia and has given access to visitors to visually explore the collection via their website.

Meanwhile, Sangiran is located in Sragen in Central Java. Presenting prehistoric life, you can bring your children to virtually check 13,685 fossils in the museum.

    3. Explore Global Events with Google Earth’s Voyager

You can now take your children to see cherry trees in Japan without having to leave home, thanks to Google Earth’s Voyager application.

Showcasing interactive guided tours as well as educational quizzes, the app also allows your children to explore and observe the world’s diverse cultures, such as how people around the globle celebrate Easter and more.

Meanwhile, the mini-quizzes help to hone children’s skills to pay attention to what they have been observing during the virtual browsing.

There are so many things you can do to help your children learn at home, including spending time playing these fun educational games. Hopefully, our recommendations can be a good start to help your children study. Good luck!

Jadi TELADAN #4: Entrepreneur vs Employee: Which one is better?

Jadi TELADAN is a casual  talk show that discusses various topics about Indonesia’s future leaders. The program is hosted by Tanoto Foundation, an independent family philanthropy organisation founded by Sukanto Tanoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto in 1981.

We’ve all seen stories of entrepreneurs who have made it big. But then there’s also a lot to be said for the stability that comes from taking a more corporate path.

What are the pros and cons of each? And which career direction is right for you? In episode 4 of Jadi TELADAN, our host Ricky Abraham puts those questions to Susanti Alie, known as Santi, who is the owner of PT Bersama Olah Boga, and Rachmat Harsono, President Director of Indonesia-based industrial gas company, PT Aneka Gas Industri Tbk.

    This episode covers:

    a. The pros and cons of each profession.

    b. Misperceptions about each profession

    c. The skills you need for each profession

    d. Tips on how to become a young entrepreneur or a professional

The Ups and Downs of being Entrepreneurs, Employees

Prior to establishing her own company, Santi worked in the fashion industry as a marketing manager. However, she decided to quit to spend more time with her children.

“I thought I would have more time; that I no longer needed to work from 8 to 5. But it is the opposite. My business takes up my time,” she said.

Santi said that as an entrepreneur, she needed to learn to manage her own time. Moreover, she also got more responsibilities as she needed to manage the whole company.

Santi also explained that she is now required to do not only the marketing side but also supervise the company’s human resources department and even establish a relationship with the government.

And while the common perception of entrepreneurs is that they are wealthy, in reality, they can sometimes make less than employees, she said.

Rachmat explained that PT Aneka Gas Industri Tbk is a family business, but as the president director of a publicly listed company, he’s no different from other employees. He recalled that his parents had taught him that he could be replaced by anyone that meeting the qualifications.

“It doesn’t mean an owner’s son can do whatever he wants,” he said.

When asked about how to choose between being an entrepreneur or employee, Rachmat suggested that one needs to understand their values and passions and their future goals prior to choosing the profession.

    Ready to Face All Challenges

Each career path has its own challenges, regardless of your profession. Therefore, perseverance and patience are commonly considered as keys to success.

Santi said that being a successful entrepreneur could not happen overnight, explaining that it took a long time for her to be a successful entrepreneur.

“What I see is today’s generation wants instant results, but being an entrepreneur is not an instant process,” she said.

“For business world, results will not lie. As long as you stay persistent, [you will be able] to see the results,” she added.

The same goes to being an employee, Rachmat said if one wants to have a successful career, he or she needs to consistently pursue their career.

“The mindset needs to be professional, give it all to the company, keep learning and don’t work to just avoid getting fired,” said Rachmat.
