The Promoting Improvement to Innovate, Teach, and Reach (PINTAR) program aims to improve the quality of basic education in Indonesia, supporting the country’s goal of becoming one of the top five most improved countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) student performance rankings by 2030. Through a combination of training, mentoring, and awareness-raising in 41 partner districts, PINTAR is helping to boost student performance in literacy, numeracy, and science.

In 2018, PISA scores revealed that Indonesian students were falling behind internationally, particularly in literacy and math. This highlighted the urgent need to address the quality of education, which was below standard.

To tackle these long-term educational challenges and provide immediate support, Tanoto Foundation launched PINTAR in 2018. Operating in five provinces and 28 districts nationwide, the program works with primary and secondary school teachers and principals to raise educational standards and foster more interactive, student-centered learning environments, enhanced by modern technology.

The results of these interventions can already be seen across the board in basic education in Indonesia.

From enrollment rates and academic performance to infrastructure development, online student engagement, parental support and professional development for teachers. Notably, the PINTAR program played a key role in preventing “learning loss” during the pandemic, ensuring that students in Tanoto Foundation’s partner schools were able to continue their studies without interruption.
